On eBay there are three routes against a negative review: reporting it to eBay for policy violations, the feedback revision request to the buyer (the most effective route after a resolved problem), and automatic removal if the buyer themselves violated eBay's principles. Unlike on Google, the reviewer here is always an identifiable contracting party – which often makes direct resolution more successful than reporting. eBay does not remove factual negative feedback from genuine buyers; the decision rests solely with eBay.
A negative eBay review weighs differently from a Google review: it is tied to a specific transaction and affects your seller rating in percent – and with it your visibility and your conditions as a merchant. eBay's rules on when feedback is removed are correspondingly structured.
The three routes at a glance
Route 1: Request a feedback revision (the most effective)
If the problem is solvable – replacement, refund, clearing up a misunderstanding – solve it first and then send a feedback revision request via eBay. The buyer can then revise the feedback. Sellers have a limited quota of requests, and the window after feedback is limited – so use this route deliberately, not reflexively.
Route 2: Report the feedback to eBay
eBay removes feedback that violates its own principles. Reportable cases include:
- Insults, vulgar language or personal attacks
- Publication of personal data (name, address, phone number)
- Feedback extortion: the buyer threatens negative feedback to force something they aren't entitled to
- Political, religious or otherwise transaction-unrelated comments
- Feedback recognisably refers to another transaction or another seller
Document feedback extortion: If a buyer threatens "refund or 1 star" by message, preserve the message thread in eBay. eBay regularly removes such cases after a report – the documented thread is your strongest argument.
Route 3: Automatic removal
eBay removes negative feedback on its own in certain constellations – for instance if the buyer violated eBay policies, their account was suspended, they didn't pay for the item, or an opened case was decided in your favour. For every unfair review, check whether one of these constellations applies, then contact eBay customer service.
What doesn't work
eBay does not remove factual negative feedback from genuine buyers ("slow shipping, item okay") – no matter how well argued. The same principle as everywhere applies: reply professionally (the reply appears publicly beneath the feedback), solve the problem, request a revision. Retaliatory feedback against buyers no longer exists on eBay anyway – sellers can only rate buyers positively.
Looking beyond eBay
Many merchants underestimate that prospective buyers google them in parallel: the Google business profile often ranks above eBay when people search for your shop name. You report non-compliant Google reviews self-service with Sternehero – Google checks and decides. The main guide explains the full Google reporting route.
Can I have an eBay review deleted?+
Not directly. eBay removes feedback after a report for policy violations, automatically for certain buyer violations – and the buyer themselves can revise it after a feedback revision request. Factual criticism from genuine buyers stays up.
How long do I have for a feedback revision request?+
The request is only possible within a limited window after the feedback was left, and sellers have a limited quota. So solve the problem quickly and send the request only afterwards.
What is feedback extortion and what can I do?+
If a buyer threatens negative feedback to force concessions they aren't entitled to (e.g. an unjustified partial refund), that violates eBay's principles. Document the message thread and report the case – eBay regularly removes such feedback.
Does Sternehero also cover eBay reviews?+
No. Sternehero specialises in reporting non-compliant Google reviews. eBay cases run through eBay's own routes – report, feedback revision or customer service.
